The restaurant sits directly adjacent to a liquor store that contributes bold panhandlers to the area, and we narrowly escaped from a certified crazy who was talking to the air and cussing the grass in front of the National Guard armory next door - she saw us eating in our car and made a beeline for us at an alarming speed, but we fired up the ride and split post-haste. Even though it’s on a main street (used to be the main drag prior to Interstate 8, when US- 86 was the major road from San Diego to points East). I’d give it 4 stars but for the neighborhood. The staff is friendly and food great, but they are obviously just staying afloat there were only two employees to man the grill and fountain on a hot Sunday afternoon, so be prepared to wait 10 - 15 minutes to get your goodies. The food is great, from the classic double burgers to the crisp fries, dipped cones, Twisters and awesome real-ice-cream shakes that put to shame the watery crap served up by McWhatisface. Since this is an old store, there’s no inside seating, even though it looks big enough to host a dining room there is a covered patio with outdoor seating, or you can camp in your car and chow down. This place is a true trip back through time! It’s a genuine, nearly untouched Foster’s from the late ‘ 50s /early ‘ 60s, right down to the perfect vintage neon sign out front and the walk-up order window.
